Home to as yet uncounted numbers of trees, flowering plants, butterflies and birds Namdapha N.P. (Arunachal Pradesh, Northeast India) is a biodiversity hot spot. Tucked away in India’s easternmost territory it borders the Indo-Birmese border. It is very close to the Himalayas and Tibet as well. The main reason for being extremely rich in animal and plant species is, apart form a reasonably good protection and being virtually unaccessible to loggers and commercial poachers, the great variety of terrain forms found within a relatively small area. Both steaming jungle covering low hills and upto 4600 m high mountain ranges are found within the park. Being the only place in the world where tiger, leopard, clouded leopard and snow leopard are found together it is known to biologists but much less to the general public. Twice I trekked through this magnificent wilderness area, once alone and once as a tour leader with a group. We used the park’s working elephants as pack animals.
